Supervisor said this…what does it mean?

Question by justellemJimsaidhello: Supervisor said this…what does it mean?
I’m a 25 yr. old male and work at an architectural firm as an office clerk. I’m very efficient and organized, always having to meet 4-5 different deadlines at the same moment. Yesterday, I re-organized our supply cabinet (a job the facilities manager should have done, frankly). My supervisor patted me on the back saying, “Terrific. I didn’t know you had it in you. You haven’t really shown your organizational skills.”
Is this an insult? I feel very frustrated because I am ALWAYS organized and people have acknowledged that to me.

He was either being sarcastic, or maybe he thought you were always responsible for that task.

Ask him to clarify what he meant by that and that you want to be aware of any short comings in your position that you may not be aware of.

it means you need to stop being so sensitive. a compliment is a compliment. say thanks and move on…

  2. take a deep breath…….pace yourself……………….ready?……………………..its NO big deal :)

it was probably just a joke.

apparently you were not dispalying the abilities that you have just shown! You need not be offended, just step up your game!

  4. if you’re truly bothered by the comment approach him mildly and tell him you were a bit confused by what he actually meant. at least it will open a dialogue for conversation

how about saying, “yeah, i don’t mind helping out the facilities manager, I would rather be doing something than not, do you want to see what else i’ve done (or have been working on)?”

then your boss will clarify whether it was a joke or he/she truly didn’t know your other abilities.

I think it’s a little insulting. He should realize that the supply cabinet doesn’t always need rearranging. I don’t think that this job is for a Facilities Manager. It’s for a secretary or office clerk like yourself. It’s something you do when everything else is done. It’s something you may stay after 5pm for to get Brownie points. Sometimes the man at the top doesn’t really know how well you are doing. Someone lower reports to him when it is time for your Review. Don’t be insulted until you see it on your Review.
